Emily Harper Wins National Championship at USGWA Nationals

Emily Harper (Deforest, WI) became the fourth individual national champion (High School division) in Wisconsin history by placing first at 112 pounds at the 11th Annual USGWA National Championships in Livonia, MI on March 30-31.  Emily, a senior at Deforest High School, defeated Sherri Berube (Escanaba, MI) in the championship finals 14-11 with a headlock in the closing seconds.

Other All-Americans included: Macy Kilty (Elem, 54 - 2nd), Brittany Bredeman (Elem, 67 - 1st), Mikayla Schwabe (Elem 1st), Chantel Strebow (MS, 94 - 2nd), Christina Reif (MS, 115 - 2nd), Michelle Organ (MS, 132.4 - 1st), Melissa Yarrington (MS, 150 - 2nd), Nichole Yarrington (HS, 102 - 11th), Kate Perkins (HS, 108 - 5th), Grace Kirby (HS, 116 - 5th), Amber Mefford (HS, 116 - 8th), Marcella Bates (HS, 146 - 8th) and Arynn Rabas (HS, 250 - 4th).
Ashley Munroe and Natalie LaPointe - National Champions

Oklahoma City University was the site for USA Wrestling's first Girls Folkstyle National Championships.  8th graders Ashley Munroe (Cadott) and Natalie LaPointe (Bayfield) won titles in the innagural year of this premier event.  Other placewinners included: Courtney Mefford (2nd), Tyra Grady (4th), Lauren Lingenfelder (8th), Sharice Schnell (2nd), Emily Raczek (2nd), Amber Mefford (4th), Grace Kirby (6th), Kaylee Frisch (7th) and Heather Miracle (4th).

Harper and LaPointe Earn All-American Status, Team Finishes 6th

Emily Harper (Deforest) and Stephanie LaPointe (Bayfield) earned All-American status at the prestigious ASICS Junior National Championships in Fargo, ND July 21-22.  LaPointe, pictured to the left, earned her second All-American award by finishing in 7th place at 124 pounds.  The junior-to-be placed 8th at 116 last year.  Emily Harper made her mark in Fargo on her fourth attempt by placing 8th at 109 pounds.  The UW-RF recruit was a USGWA National Champion in March.

The Wisconsin also finished 6th in the Women's National Duals, making it consecutive years they have earned All-American status as a team.

WWF Girls Folkstyle State Tournament - March 21st

The 2009 WWF Girl's Folkstyle State Tournament will be held in Stevens Point at Pacelli High School on March 21st.  Last year was the frist year that the Wisconsin Wrestling Federation hosted a girls-only Folkstyle state tournament.  The WWF state tournament is recognized as the OFFICIAL Girl's State Folkstyle Championships, organized by the state's governing body for amatuer wrestling.

We apologize in advance for the scheduling conflict with the USGWA National Championships in Michigan.  We recognize the inconvenience that this may have caused for families and hope in the future we do not face issues like this again.
USGWA Individual High School Rankings

The United States Girl's Wrestling Association releases numerous individual rankings lists throughout the season.  In the USGWA's most recent list, six Wisconsin athletes were ranked at their respective weight class.

108 - Kate Perkins, Janesville Parker (Senior), 5th
116 - Amber Mefford, Sauk Prairie (Senior), 5th
120 - Christina Reif, Kenosha Bradford (Freshman), 11th
124 - Kate Berry, Middleton (Senior), 12th
146 - Michelle Organ, Reedsburg (Freshman), 8th
250 - Heather Miracle, Berlin (Junior), 9th
WWF Girl's Freestyle State Tournament - April 25th

The Wisconsin Wrestling Federation is proud to host the WWF Girl's Freestyle State Tournament in conjunction with the WWF Freestyle State Tournament in Wisconsin Rapids on April 25th.  This will be a historic weekend in Wisconsin wrestling as the Freestyle and Greco-Roman State Tournaments will be held in the same weekend at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School.  With the addition of the Girl's Freestyle State Tournament, this will be the largest state tournament of its kind.
