Lampe Wins Bronze Medal at Junior World Championships

BEIJING, CHINA - Alyssa Lampe (Tomahawk, WI/USOEC) claimed a bronze medal at 48 kg/105.5 lbs, the top U.S. performance on the final day of the women's freestyle competition at the Junior World Championships at the China Agricultural University Gymnasium on Saturday, August 25th, 2008.

Ponzer, Perkins, Vanden Wymelenberg and Ludlow Win Badger State Brawl

The Badger State Brawl was held in Kenosha, WI January 6, 2008.  Individual champions in the high school division included Steph Ponzer (Oshkosh), Kate Perkins (Janesville), Hanah Vanden Wymelenberg (Wrightstown) and Peggy Ludlow (Kenosha).
Patricia Hill Gives Verbal Commitment to the USOEC Women's Wrestling Program

Patricia Hill of Tomahawk High School gave her verbal commitment to the United States Olympic Education Center at Northen Michigan University for the 2008-09 wrestling season.  Hill is one of five athletes who committed to the USOEC.  Hill is projected to compete at 48 kg in the future.

Emily Harper Wins National Championship at USGWA Nationals

Emily Harper (Deforest, WI) became the fourth individual national champion (High School division) in Wisconsin history by placing first at 112 pounds at the 11th Annual USGWA National Championships in Livonia, MI on March 30-31.  Emily, a senior at Deforest High School, defeated Sherri Berube (Escanaba, MI) in the championship finals 14-11 with a headlock in the closing seconds.

Other All-Americans included: Macy Kilty (Elem, 54 - 2nd), Brittany Bredeman (Elem, 67 - 1st), Mikayla Schwabe (Elem 1st), Chantel Strebow (MS, 94 - 2nd), Christina Reif (MS, 115 - 2nd), Michelle Organ (MS, 132.4 - 1st), Melissa Yarrington (MS, 150 - 2nd), Nichole Yarrington (HS, 102 - 11th), Kate Perkins (HS, 108 - 5th), Grace Kirby (HS, 116 - 5th), Amber Mefford (HS, 116 - 8th), Marcella Bates (HS, 146 - 8th) and Arynn Rabas (HS, 250 - 4th).
Ashley Munroe and Natalie LaPointe - National Champions

Oklahoma City University was the site for USA Wrestling's first Girls Folkstyle National Championships.  8th graders Ashley Munroe (Cadott) and Natalie LaPointe (Bayfield) won titles in the innagural year of this premier event.  Other placewinners included: Courtney Mefford (2nd), Tyra Grady (4th), Lauren Lingenfelder (8th), Sharice Schnell (2nd), Emily Raczek (2nd), Amber Mefford (4th), Grace Kirby (6th), Kaylee Frisch (7th) and Heather Miracle (4th).

US Olympic Hopefuls

Several Wisconsin athletes will take aim at a shot to achieve their dreams in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China by competing in the 2008 US Olympic Team Trials.  The champion from each of the four women's weight classes will represent the United States in Beijing in August.  Alaina Berube (River Falls, WI) is currently seeded 2nd in the mini-tournament at the Trials.  She was 2nd in the 2004 Olympic Team Trials.  Other athletes participating are Alyssa Lampe (Tomahawk, WI), Deanna Rix (River Falls, WI), Amberlee Ebert (Reedsville, WI), Lacey Novinska (Fennimore, WI) and Megan Goldsmith (Black River Falls, WI).

Lampe, who was the first female to qualify and later place at the WIAA High School state tournament, trains in Marquette, MI at the US Olympic Education Center and earned a Bronze medal in the Junior World Championships last year.  She will compete in the Junior World Championships later this summer while Berube will represent the US at the World University Games in Thesolaniki, Greece in July.
